Erika Bezerra Parente is a medical doctor with more than 20 years of experience in clinical practice in diabetes, obesity, and metabolic diseases field. She was an assistant professor of endocrinology at the Faculdade de Ciências Ciências Médicas da Santa Casa de São Paulo, in São Paulo, Brazil and did medical specialization in internal medicine, and endocrinology at the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo, in São Paulo, Brazil. Her PhD was about the effects of a high-fat or a high-carbohydrate diet on intramyocellular fat and the thesis was defended in 2009 at University of São Paulo, Brazil. She did postdoctoral research on obesity and diabetes complications at the Folkhälsan Research Center, in Helsinki, Finland from 2020 to 2024 and is a visitor researcher at Helsinki University. Since February 2024, she is a Senior Global Medical Advisor for Obesity and MASH at Boehringer Ingelheim, Germany. She has published several papers regarding type 2 diabetes, type 1 diabetes and obesity, especially regarding body fat distribution on diabetes complications.
